# YouTube tags checker

https://flaghand.com/youtube-tags-checker counts a video's tags the way YouTube does and shows what is left of its 500
characters: each tag's characters, a comma between tags, and 2 more for a tag with a space, for the quotes YouTube puts
around it (Foo-Baz is 7, Foo Baz is 9). It shows each tag's own count, marks the tags past 500 and any < or > (YouTube
refuses them), leaves out a repeated tag, and copies the tags that fit, joined with commas, for YouTube Studio's Tags
box. Free, no sign-up. It runs in your browser: nothing you type or add is uploaded or stored, and there is no API.

## How to use it

1. Type or paste the tags, separated by commas or line breaks: the count updates as you type.
2. Copy tags, then paste them into Tags under Show more in the video's details in YouTube Studio.

An agent can open it with the tags in the link's hash, which never reaches a server:

## Questions.

### What is the character limit for YouTube tags?

500 characters for all of a video’s tags together. Each comma between tags counts, and a tag with a space in it counts 2 more, for the quotes YouTube puts around it: Foo-Baz is 7, Foo Baz is 9.

### How many tags can a YouTube video have?

As many as fit in 500 characters. That is about 30 to 40 short tags, or fewer long ones.

### Do YouTube tags help?

A little. YouTube’s own help says tags play a minimal role in a video’s discovery, and that the title, thumbnail and description matter more. Tags help most when people often misspell what your video is about.

### Where do I add tags on YouTube?

In YouTube Studio, open the video’s Details, choose Show more, and paste the copied tags into Tags. You can also edit tags in the YouTube app.

### Are my tags uploaded?

No. They are counted in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored, and the page sets no cookies.

Checked on November 3, 2026: the [YouTube Data API’s videos reference](https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/videos) (tags) and YouTube Help, [Add tags to your YouTube videos](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/146402). The count is the one Flaghand runs on a YouTube draft before it is approved.

## Flaghand

This is the count Flaghand's desk uses for every YouTube draft's tags, before its owner approves it.

Flaghand is X and LinkedIn posting for AI agents: your agent drafts through Flaghand's API, CLI or MCP server, you
approve the exact preview with your passkey, and Flaghand posts exactly that.
