How long can YouTube Shorts be?

YouTube Shorts can be up to 3 minutes long, including exactly 3:00. The video must be square or vertical and meet YouTube's upload-date rule for the channel. A vertical video is not automatically a Short regardless of length or upload date.

Checked on October 31, 2026. YouTube's own help pages currently disagree about copyright claims on Shorts over one minute; that distinction matters before you publish.

Which uploads qualify as Shorts?

YouTube's three-minute Shorts rules distinguish these cases:

Channel Upload date Square or vertical video up to 3 minutes
Standard channel On or after October 15, 2024 Categorized as a Short
Official Artist Channel, or a channel linked to a music Content Owner On or after December 8, 2025 Categorized as a Short
Either channel type, before its cutoff Before the date above The new three-minute classification does not apply retroactively to older long-form uploads

The change extended Shorts beyond the previous one-minute limit. It did not turn existing Shorts into long-form videos. For example, a 2:30 vertical upload from September 2024 remains long-form; a standard channel's 2:30 vertical upload from November 2024 falls within the new Shorts rule. For an Official Artist Channel, a 2:30 vertical upload from November 2025 remains long-form under the later cutoff.

These distinctions come from the same YouTube classification page, including its Official Artist Channel FAQ.

Upload date is not publish date

YouTube defines upload date as the date the file was imported into YouTube; publish date is when it became public. A private or unlisted upload can therefore have a different publish date when you make it public later. The Shorts cutoff is an upload-date rule, not a promise that publishing an older file today reclassifies it. See YouTube's upload and publish date explanation.

Do not assume that a claimed 1:01–3:00 Short will be playable, recommended or monetized. YouTube's official pages currently give conflicting guidance:

Check the actual video's copyright notice and restrictions in YouTube Studio → Content, open the claim details, and follow the options shown for that video. Do not treat either help-page statement as proof of your upload's status. YouTube's claim dispute instructions explain where those details appear. The longer-Short warning is about more than 60 seconds, not every Short or every vertical upload.

A Content ID claim is not itself a copyright strike. A valid copyright removal request can remove the video and produce a strike, including during a dispute. Only dispute when you have a valid basis; a dispute does not guarantee a release. See YouTube's explanation of the dispute process.

Music length is a separate limit

A three-minute video does not give you three minutes of every song. YouTube says most songs in the Shorts Audio Library can be used for up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short; some allow only 60 or 30 seconds. The track selector shows the allowance. Use the amount YouTube offers for that track, rather than assuming the full video duration is licensed. See three-minute Shorts and music and Shorts music eligibility.

The YouTube Audio Library is a separate option: YouTube's three-minute guide says its royalty-free tracks do not receive Content ID claims. Do not confuse those tracks with commercial songs available through the Shorts creation tools, or assume that adding the same commercial recording to an externally edited file grants the same permission. YouTube explains the in-product music licensing in its music eligibility guide.

If a claim needs removing, Studio may offer Trim out segment, Replace song or Erase song, depending on the claim. The claimed material must be fully removed for the claim to clear. YouTube warns that saved Studio Editor changes cannot be reverted, so keep your original file and preview the edit before saving. See remove copyright-claimed content.

Upload a Short directly to YouTube

From a computer

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio on the channel you intend to use.
  2. Choose CREATE → Upload videos and select the square or vertical video, no longer than three minutes.
  3. Complete Details, including the title, description and required audience choice, and any video elements relevant to your upload. Review the copyright results in Checks; an initial check does not rule out a later claim or removal request.
  4. In Visibility, choose private, unlisted or public, or set YouTube's scheduled publication time. Save or publish only when the details and restrictions are right for you. Uploading the file alone is not the same as making it public.
  5. In Studio's Content list, confirm the video's classification, visibility and any restrictions after processing.

YouTube documents the desktop Shorts upload path and the full upload, checks and visibility flow.

Upload an existing video from the YouTube phone app

  1. Sign in on the intended channel, tap Create → Upload a video, and select your square or vertical file.
  2. Use the trim editor if needed. For a video longer than three minutes, YouTube offers Edit into a Short to select an eligible portion; it does not make the entire longer file a Short.
  3. Tap Next, make any offered edits, then continue to the details screen. Add a title of up to 100 characters, choose privacy and the required audience setting, and review any checks or copyright warnings shown.
  4. Tap Upload when ready. Confirm the resulting visibility and restrictions in Studio; private and unlisted choices do not mean public publication.

These are YouTube's Android upload instructions and iPhone/iPad instructions.

Record a new Short in the app

Choose Create → Short, select the recording duration at the upper right, and record one or more clips totaling up to three minutes. Edit, continue to the details and audience choices, then upload when ready, or save a draft to finish later. The recording duration selector and any chosen song's allowance are separate controls. See Create YouTube Shorts.

Can Flaghand publish this Short?

Flaghand's published drafts and media reference does not document a YouTube or Shorts publishing kind as of October 31, 2026. Use YouTube's native upload workflow above for this task; do not assume that Flaghand's general video-upload support includes delivery to YouTube. This guide does not promise a release date.
